Performing Umrah is a deeply spiritual journey that requires proper understanding of the rituals involved. This comprehensive guide walks you through each step, from preparation to completion.
Preparation Before Umrah
Spiritual Preparation
- Make sincere intention (niyyah) for Umrah alone
- Seek forgiveness from others and purify your intentions
- Learn the necessary prayers and supplications in advance
- Increase your good deeds and charity before departure
Physical Preparation
- Ensure you’re in good health for the physical demands
- Practice walking distances to build stamina
- Learn about the rituals through reliable sources
Entering the State of Ihram
At the Miqat
- Perform ghusl (purification bath) if possible
- Trim nails and remove unwanted body hair
- Wear the two pieces of white cloth (for men)
- Women wear regular modest clothing
Making Intention
- Recite the Talbiyah: “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk…”
- Continue reciting Talbiyah throughout the journey

Performing Tawaf
Starting Tawaf
- Enter Masjid al-Haram with right foot first
- Make your way to the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad)
- Begin Tawaf from the Black Stone, facing it
- Recite specific supplications for each circuit
The Seven Circuits
- Start each circuit from the Black Stone
- Men should uncover right shoulder during first three circuits
- Walk at normal pace, don’t run
- Maintain concentration and spiritual focus
- Complete all seven circuits continuously
After Tawaf
- Pray two rak’ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible
- Drink Zamzam water while facing the Kaaba
- Perform Sa’i immediately or later
Performing Sa’i
Between Safa and Marwah
- Start at Safa hill, facing the Kaaba
- Recite specific prayers at Safa
- Walk to Marwah at normal pace
- Men should run between the green lights
- Complete seven rounds (Safa to Marwah is one)
Completion of Sa’i
- End at Marwah hill
- Recite prayers of completion
- You may now exit the state of Ihram
Shaving or Trimming Hair
For Men
- Shaving the entire head is preferred
- Alternatively, trimming all hair equally
- This completes your Umrah
For Women
- Trim a fingertip’s length of hair
- Do not shave the head
- Maintain modesty throughout
