What’s Included in an Umrah Package (and What’s Not)
Quick answer: Most UK Umrah packages include visa processing, return flights, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, airport transfers, the intercity transfer between the two cities, and a local support contact. Meals, travel insurance, tips, laundry and optional excursions are usually excluded. The written inclusion list matters more than the headline price.
What is normally included
A standard flights-included package from the UK typically covers:
- Visa processing. The provider applies for the Umrah visa on your behalf and tells you which documents and vaccination records are needed.
- Return flights. Usually from a named UK airport to Jeddah or Madinah, with the routing and baggage allowance stated on the quote.
- Hotels in both cities. The number of nights in Makkah and Madinah, the hotel name or distance band, and the rooming basis should all be written down.
- Airport transfers. Transport from the arrival airport to the first hotel.
- Intercity transfer. The journey between Makkah and Madinah, usually by coach or private vehicle.
- Local support. A phone or WhatsApp contact for problems during the trip.
- Ziyarat. Often included in Madinah; in Makkah it is sometimes optional.
If any of those six items is missing from a quote, ask why before comparing prices.
What is often not included
These are the items that most often turn a cheap quote into an expensive trip:
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Meals | Breakfast is sometimes included; half-board is rare. Ask which meals, at which hotel. |
| Travel insurance | Usually excluded and sometimes required for the visa. |
| Personal spending | Laundry, phone data, taxis, gifts and tips. |
| Extra nights | A later return date is rarely free, even when the hotel has space. |
| Optional excursions | Makkah ziyarat, Taif, Jeddah or Madinah extras. |
| Qurbani or charity | Never part of a package price. |
| Airport extras | Excess baggage, seat selection, lounge access. |
Flights-included versus land-only
A flights-included package bundles the airfare, so you have one price and one provider to deal with. Land-only packages cover the visa, hotels and ground transport but leave you to book flights yourself.
Land-only can be cheaper if you can find a good fare on your dates, and it gives you control over airline, route and baggage. It also means you carry the risk if a flight is delayed or cancelled. Neither option is automatically better: the question is whether you want convenience or control.
What the rooming basis actually means
“Quad” does not mean four separate beds in every hotel. It usually means four people sharing a room, which may include two double beds or a double plus bunks. Family rooms and connecting rooms are not guaranteed unless confirmed in writing.
Before paying, ask:
- How many people are in each room?
- What is the bed configuration?
- Are children counted in the room occupancy?
- Is a cot or extra bed available, and at what cost?
Questions to ask before you pay
- Which hotel, or which distance band? A star rating alone does not tell you how far you will walk to the Haram each day.
- Are flights included? If yes, which airline, routing and baggage allowance?
- Are transfers private or shared? Shared coaches can add waiting time at the airport.
- What is excluded? Meals, insurance, tips and excursions should be listed, not implied.
- Is the price fixed or indicative? Many quotes are estimates until dates and availability are confirmed.
- What happens if the named hotel is unavailable? A reputable provider offers the same tier and distance band, not a cheaper substitute.
- What is the cancellation policy? Ask before paying a deposit.
Red flags in an inclusion list
- A hotel described only as “5 star” with no name or distance band.
- A price that looks low because visa or transfers are excluded.
- No written list of inclusions at all.
- “Subject to availability” used to justify any hotel, at any distance.
- A quote that will not confirm the rooming basis.
A simple test before booking
Take two quotes and write the same seven items beside each one: visa, flights, hotel and distance, rooming, transfers, meals, support. The quote that answers all seven is easier to compare honestly, even if it is not the cheapest.
For current examples, the 7-night Madinah and Makkah package starts at £1,120 per person, the 10-night Makkah Priority package at £1,139, and the 10-night 4-star package with flights at £1,099. Each listing states what is included and what is not.
FAQs
Is the Umrah visa always included?
In most UK packages it is, but confirm whether the visa fee is included or added later, and which documents you must supply.
Are meals included in Umrah packages?
Rarely as standard. Some hotels include breakfast; half-board and full-board are uncommon. Check whether meals are at the hotel or elsewhere.
Do I need travel insurance for Umrah?
It is usually excluded from the package and is strongly advisable. Some visa routes require proof of cover, so confirm the current requirement before you travel.
Is ziyarat included?
Madinah ziyarat is often included. Makkah ziyarat is sometimes optional or charged separately. Ask which sites are covered and whether transport is provided.
Can I extend my stay?
Sometimes, but extra nights are usually charged and depend on hotel availability. Ask for the extension cost in writing before paying the deposit.
